RE: Clarification: Got a DNA match with Monica Parker - the chr. comparison.

Hi Lesley and cousins!  Lesley had some questions about my earlier message, and I thought you might all be interested in the answers.  You can see her questions at the bottom of the message.

The “MRCA” is short for “Most RECENT Common Ancestor” – given that the Vosper Bawden line is 4 generations more recent, it is definitely much more likely to be the source of the common DNA.  Given that each generation inherits 50% of their DNA from each of their parents, Robert Vosper would have received only about 6.25% of his DNA from Joseph Vosper and Mary Frane.  By the time it gets to our generation it is only .2%.  The chance of having a match at that percent is pretty small.

Check it out this way:

The numbers on the far left represent what % of Joseph’s DNA each generation would have received….so about . 2% by the time it gets to our generation, while the second set of numbers shows the % that would have been transferred from Robert Vosper down, ending with our generations getting about 3%.   So that is much more likely to be what we see when we compare results.

Even though you have multiple occurrences of Joseph and Mary (Frane), you would be multiplying that number by .2%  and still coming up with a very small number.

Paula’s Vosper line is on her paternal side.  My Vosper line is on my maternal side.  Yours is on your maternal line.

Hope this answers your questions!

Hi Terry
Wow!  What a lot of work you have done with Monica's data!  She certainly does share a good chunk of cMs with you and your brothers.  I notice from the GenomeMate matches that Monica matches on chromosome 10 & 16 with Paula - small matches albeit!  I note also that this is from the paternal side - how does that fit in?  I notice that you have us down as descending from the Vosper/Bawden line - is that because we match others from that same line?
I have often wondered as we have two Vosper lines that meet up (took us ages to sort out on the paper trail!!) that we might have more DNA from Joseph Vosper & Mary Frane as they occur twice on our tree?  Maybe you could let us know?
Thanks for all the hard work Teri!

Regards
