Updated Vosper Cousin Chart

I finally squeezed in another two lines of Vosper descendants – you will find the line for Reverend John Vosper somewhere near the middle (11th column), and Cousin Ken in the adjacent column (the 12th).

We are delighted that Cousin Ken has ordered a Y-DNA kit, and can hardly wait for the results to come back!

Vosper Photo Collage

Hi Vosper Cousins!  Busy week, working on matters Vosper.

Hey, it’s been a couple of years since we did the Vosper Photo Collage – would anyone like to add their face to the pics?

Here’s the one we did in 2017:

Uh, oh!  While looking at my DRAFTS folder in my email, I found a couple of things that I think should have been sent out when I was in Salt Lake City.  Here is one of them, the above mentioned record.

A Vosper with R-M269 haplotype has joined the Cornwall project...

I wonder if it is John, Moira’s husband, whose email went “dark” after he didn’t match Cousin Robert.   I have no way to contact him.

I provide these to make it easier for you to put them on your tree, so you don’t have to do all the uploading yourself, you can just save to your tree.

On a different subject, the origins of the Vosper family...

Good morning, Vosper Cousins!

During a few hours of insomnia early this morning I found a link to this article on my Facebook feed, and SOMETHING made me look at it:

Genetic analysis of male Hungarian Conquerors: European and Asian paternal lineages of the conquering Hungarian tribes

If you’re so inclined, you can read the entire article here:  https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12520-019-00996-0?fbclid=IwAR3DyqHQhv1n7-252oNsx8cAPjV7MkwPE1RdcvnH0pwla3zoa_-xlzLUKiw

My disclaimer:  I don’t even PRETEND to understand all of this article.    Not even MOST of it.

I think I looked at it because of the rumored origin of the Vosper family being in Silesia (Wikipedia link), which was near Hungary, sorta.

In any case, the article turns out to be about the DNA testing of ancient Hungarian warriors for their Y Haplogroups (Y DNA, remember, is passed from father to son).  What caught my eye was that one of the warriors tested out as J1-M267, which is what I believe Cousin Robert tested out as before he had some special SNPs ordered, which now gives him a haplogroup of:

In other words, J-Z18186 is a subgroup of J1-M267.

Here is the Abstract of the article:

One of the warriors they tested has a J1-M267 haplogroup:

I don’t understand Y DNA haplogroups well enough to understand how close the Z1828 subgroup is to the Z1818 “Cousin Robert subgroup” (If you want to try to figure it out, the phylogenetictree is here:  file:///C:/Users/Teri/Documents/Documents/Geneology/Bennett%20Tree/Vosper/j1phylogenetictree.pdf ), but I think it’s very interesting the directions Y DNA analysis is taking us in understanding the origins of the worlds peoples.  This tells me that we are getting closer to understanding the ancient origins of our Vosper family.  However, we still need another Vosper male to get his DNA Y tested at FTDNA.com to confirm Robert’s test results.    FTDNA.com has just announced a reduction in the cost, but it is nothing to sneeze at.  Anyone interested (Cousin Ken)?

Have a good week!

FW: Corrections to the various Thomas Dyer Vospers in my tree - I was SO CONFUSED!

Our dear cousin Tricia was ever so helpful in pointing out some errors in my tree regarding the various Thomas Dyer Vospers.  You can see her  comments below, and note that I have made the corrections on my tree.

I SINCERELY hope that all of you will point out any errors on the tree….

Thanks, Tricia!

Now, on to straighten out Kenneth's lineage!

Oh, and Kenneth has indicated that he is NOT the Kenneth who has the Y-DNA Haplogroup on 23andme – that is a different Kenneth.

Subject: Thomas Dyer Vosper 1887 to 1980

Hi Teri,

Thank you for your Christmas and New Year greetings.  I hope you had an enjoyable time and a happy New Year to you too.

Also thank you for recent cousins' emails which prompted me to log into my Ancestry account (which I have not done for some time) to add some relatives.

In doing so I noticed in your family tree that you have my grandfather Thomas Dyer Vosper (born 12th December 1887 and died 4th December 1980) as incorrectly being married twice.  The second time to Beatrice Maud Blundell 1885 to 1955. This errors then compounds and shows  my mother  Della Elizabeth Vosper (born1919) having a half sister Lilian Myra which she certainly does not have and nor does she have a brother William Robert Vosper.  She has one brother Owen John (deceased)  whom I have chosen not to add to my tree whilst my mother is still living.

So my grandfather was never married twice, but my great grandfather Thomas Dyer Vosper 1860 to 1941 was.  The first marriage was to Alice Kate Savery  and there were 4 children - Alice, Edmund Savery, Thomas Dyer (my grandfather) and Harry Savery.  Sadly Alice was only 34 when she died.  (I remember well her portrait hung proudly in my grandfather's house)!

My great grandfather remarried some years later in 1904 when he was 44 and his 2nd wife Beatrice Maud Blundell was just 19!  They had three children Elsie, George and Vera.  George is the grandfather of cousin Graham in Plymouth.    Also it is my grandfather Thomas Dyer (1887 to 1980) who was in World War 1 and has war medals not his father.

Having 3 Thomas Dyers I think is very confusing and has certainly caught me out when I've been adding details, so I hope you don't mind me getting in touch.  Also I thought it might be significant if you are looking at the lineage of Kenneth re your recent emails.

Thank you so much for keeping our cousins in touch and all the research you are doing - it is very much appreciated.

With very best wishes

Tricia

Hi,  so pleased the details were quantified.  The trail started with the help of another cousin of mine in Australia from another section of our tree and the Devon Family History Society volunteers, here in Exeter.  It's such a small office but they are really knowledgeable with which website to use for research.

So many people emigrated from Devon And Cornwall it's amazing the resources they have.

Wait to hear from you as am able to visit the Tree House each Monday till I go to Australia.  This coincides with meeting a great nephew from Exeter Cathedral School.

Rev John Vosper ancestor of Richard Willis - MYSTERY SOLVED!

Hi everyone! Cousin Sheila has been working really hard at uncovering the mystery of how Rev. John Vosper fits into our Vosper group, and we have finally figured it out!  Our common ancestors are Robert Vosper and Mary Bawden.  Some of her work is reflected in the attachments to this email, shown below:

Baptism of Mary Bawden, 15 Jan 1773 (at bottom of page)  On my tree here:  https://www.ancestry.com/mediaui-viewer/tree/47009625/person/6953643513/media/bcd172ec-7048-4cd1-9b3a-45af69ae67ff

After Sheila worked her magic I looked back at the Visitations of Cornwall charts, and he was on it in plain sight!

Reverend John can be found on my tree at:  https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/47009625/person/6953769787/facts   I need to incorporate the data from Cousin Sheila’s attachments, and then it will be correct (I hope!)

I will be updating the Cousins Chart soon with Rev. John’s descendants down to Richard, but I’ve got to make some corrections to Kenneth Vosper’s line and I’ve got the whole Thomas Dyer Vosper lines situation to try to straighten out.  There were so many TDV’s I’ve gotten them quite mixed up.

Hope your January is going well.  Time sure does fly, doesn’t it?

Cousin Teri

Hi, attach documents that clarify the Rev John Vospers lineage.  Looks like he fits in with Robert Vosper and Mary Bowden but not 100% yet.  Going back into Exeter Tree House next Monday to search again. There were numerous references to him on trove.nla.gov.au/newspapers and again New Zealand papers on line. Would you pass the info onto Kay Willis.

We come back to trying to clarify Mary Bawdens history which we are trying to done t

FW: Rev John Vosper

As soon as I sent out the message about Rev. John Vosper, Cousin Sheila got in touch to say she was working on Vosper matters and had found the following article.

Also, on Dec. 27 Cousin Sheila wrote:

Hi,
in March I will be in Brisbane and am able to visit Toowoomba to see if there is any information held by the Toowoomba Historical Society to add to that you already have. I could then send it to you to add to your blog. What do you think?

My younger son has moved to Australia his wife’s family now live in Brisbane hence my visit.

Regards. Cousin Sheila

I have a feeling we’re going to figure this out soon!

We are both looking at Vosper family, I just found the piece :

Announcing a new cousin: Kenneth Vosper

Some exciting new news on the Vosper front – there is a new cousin, Kenneth Vosper, who is on our radar.  Actually, Lesley found him a few months ago, as did Jon – I’ve just been terribly slow to respond!

Here is how Ancestry shows his DNA matches to our cousins (the ones who have shared their DNA with me):

My brother:

Cousin David:

Oops, nothing for cousin Lesley:

SUSAN BRENT KATZBAN IS THE WINNER, with the largest amount!  Given that her relationship is through a NPE (not the parent expected), this will be very exciting to her!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CORRECTION:  THE 23andme Kenneth Vosper is  a DIFFERENT Kenneth Vosper, so the following section does not refer to this new cousin:

In addition IN A VERY EXCITING WAY, Cousin Jon reports he is a Y DNA match to Cousin Ken, according to 23andme:

Why is this so exciting?  Because 1) it confirms the Jewish haplotype goes back 6 generations 2) it confirms there were no NPEs in both family lines.

Here is what the confirmation looks like visually (although Kenneth’s lineage is still a bit up in the air – we’ve got to figure out which Thomas Dyer Vosper his father is descended from):

 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ken, and any other cousins who have forgotten, I have a blog where all the Vosper Cousin correspondence is kept:  http://vospercousins.blogspot.com/

Most recently I was in Salt Lake City looking up copies of the original BMD records for the Vosper line, and there are copies of all of the ones I found on the blog, as well as on my tree at:  https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/tree/47009625/family/pedigree?cfpid=6669495099&selnode=1

There are also things I found of interest during my research, like our relationship on the Vosper line to William the Conqueror.  To find anything, use the search box on the upper left hand side:

If anyone would like to share their DNA results with me, to help further the Vosper research, you can do it by going to your DNA settings, go to Sharing Preferences, and clicking “Change” and then going to the bottom and clicking “Add a person”  and enter my email address.

I will send out an updated Cousin Chart as soon as we figure out which Thomas Dyer Vosper is Kenneth’s grandfather.

Oh, I’ve been on a bit of a ‘tear’ since finding Kenneth, so there are more posts from me than usual.

Have a wonderful week!

Rev . John Vosper - research request

I have not given up on figuring out how Rev. John fits into our family!   I have put in a request for an international library loan for:

But in so doing I noticed that it said that:

Of course, it was the home  location that I was after in the article, so I’m going to see if I can find something about him.   You can find my original research at:  https://vospercousins.blogspot.com/search?q=Rev.+John

Could someone who has FindMyPast see if they can find any records on Rev. John Vosper, born in Dorset abt. 1865?

Cousin Teri

Of general Vosper interest, I came across this today

The Vosper-Thomas thing is interesting!  I wonder if we have any THOMAS cousins who are really Vospers!
