Happy Saturday Vosper Cousins, unless it's Sunday – then Happy Sunday!

 

My last email with Glenda's DNA matches prompted this reply from Lesley Dawson, pointing out that I had missed Tony in the analysis.  Sorry about that, Lesley!  I've been overwhelmed with some other DNA work, and I missed the email with your brother's GedMatch number.  I've now updated my database, and he will be included in future analysis.

 

Lesley, I'll get back to you individually about the GMP issues.

 

Cousins, I did all the positive matches that Lesley documented below and put them in my database – it's nice to see that BIG match with Cousin Paula!

I have also received an email from Cousin Carol with her GedMatch results, so I'll be updating my records with her data, and sending out one more update on the DNA matches we share. 

 

Frankly, I find it amazing that we have even these small matches so far back!  But then, I find it amazing that we, such distant cousins, have gotten in touch with each other!

I don't have all the Gedmatch numbers for the Vosper group but here are a few results for my brother Tony Parker (I did send his Gedmatch number a while ago).  Obviously he matches my sister Monica and myself.

No doubt you have more Gedmatch numbers than I have but he matches to quite a few of the group.  I wouldn't know how to take it any further as I'm still grappling with the ins and outs of GMP and still having a LOT of trouble uploading data from FTDna into it.  Managed Ancestry and Gedmatch OK but FTDna can get no data in for any of my profiles!

FW: Gedmatch results with our newest cousin, Glenda

Glenda got some positive results in matches to some of the other Vosper Cousins who have DNA tested.  I've documented the results below.

 

Given that our common ancestor is about 10 generations back, it would be kind of miraculous to find matching segments – but I did find some!  They are small segments, which are often ignored by genetic genealogists as being IBS – identical by state.  However, we have found the very same segments among different family members, showing they are IBD – identical by descent.  Here are the results of the comparisons:

As you can see from the subject, Glenda is joining our little group. She found us through the Vosper Cousins Blog!  She is a descendant of the Barriball family, and I have attached an updated Cousin Chart.

I have had my DNA done by FamilyTree and 23andMe.  There is a tree of sorts connected to my FamilyTree results. 

 

I have been working on family history with varying intensities since about 1980 when I set off to collect stories and pictures on a journey around Kansas when I was living near San Francisco.  Then my husband took a job in England in 1996 and that's when I got more serious.  I've transcribed various parish registers in Wales and Cornwall.  I am the OPC for Werrington so I know that resource well.  I also photographed and recorded the inscriptions for the Werrington churchyard.  When my father died in 2000, I decided to get serious so started trying to put books together when I retired in 2003 – the first one took me until 2016, Touching Dirt, Vol. I.  Hope my mom's doesn't take as long, but it's all turning out to be much more complex.

I do not have an online family tree.  I have several cousins who have online trees.  I can direct you to them if you need.

I am in touch with several other Vosper cousins, one in particular, Anne Benoy in Canberra, Australia was born in Cornwall and goes back every year.  I have recently returned from a quick 5 days when I got to visit Trerice Manor.

A new Vosper Cousin from Australia! Robyn Williams joins our group....

Hi there, Vosper Cousins!  Hope you are all doing GREAT!

 

Cousin Paula had a DNA match that led us to a new cousin:

 

 

I corresponded with rolyn173 and we confirmed that she, Robyn, is a descendant of Robert Vosper and Mary Bawden.   Robyn lives in Queensland, Australia.  I have updated our cousin chart, attached.  You can see her particular line highlighted, below:

 

So, she is the third descendant of Lydia’s on our chart.  It was the first Samuel Friend Williams who emigrated to Australia.  

 

All of the people with asterisks by their names have DNA tested.  It’s a never ending wonder to me how some cousins across the world inherit the same portion of a chromosome, while others don’t!  That’s why it’s important to test.

Needed: Y DNA Participant - FREE

Hello, again, Cousins!

 

I was talking with our Vosper Cousin, Robert Norris Vosper, who is a Y-DNA participant that shows our Vosper line is Jewish in origin. 

 

(For those of you who are newish to the group, I have created a fake person on my family tree on Ancestry.com, at https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/47009625/person/24454081783/facts    that contains information on the Jewish connection to our tree.)

 

We had done another test with another Vosper descendant that had a different result, so we need a “tie-breaker”!  

 

Robert and I have agreed to pay for a Y-DNA test for a male Vosper descendant that has the “Vosper” surname, comes from an unbroken line of Vosper male family members, and is at least 2 generations separated from our common ancestor.    Looking at the cousin chart, I think that possible candidates would be an uncle of Tricia Coles, Graham Vosper and any other male members of his family, a brother or uncle of Carol Vosper, and an uncle of William E Williams, an uncle of Robert McAuslan.  There may be other cousins you know of that would be possibilities.

 

The test is very easy, just involving a cheek swab.

 

We have other males closer to our immediate family, but would prefer a ‘farther out’ cousin.

Many thanks for your response.  How very exciting.  I would love to be a part of your group of 'cousins'.

 

As a positioning, my line from John Menhinnett & Hannah Sawdy - is through their daughter Maria, who married John Marshall in Bodmin in 1838.

They had two daughters - Catherine (or aka Caroline) & Anna Maria (my gg g/mother).

Maria died in Plymouth in 1852, then John married again in 1853 and sailed for Adelaide.  I only discovered the voyage to Adelaide a couple of years ago, from a marriage notice when Anna Maria married Philip Heydon in Sydney in 1864.

It stated that Anna was the second daughter of John Marshall of Adelaide.  Woo Hoo!  Up until then who was John Marshall amongst the gazillion other John Marshalls that popped up?

In quick order, I obtained his second marriage certificate from England, then organised a trip to Adelaide to follow up his trail.

I am very happy to provide details of the information that I have for John Menhinnett and family, just let me know how you would like to do this.

 

As far as the Vosper family is concerned, I started looking at this in more details because the name Joanna Goddard Vosper had always intrigued me, but until this last Christmas, hadn't had the time to have a good look at it.

Cautiously back to Daniel Vosper marrying Judith Dinham in 1621 and have a copy of his Will, but am very happy to have corrections etc. where I have gone astray.
