Hello Cousins, and Kay!

Another of Paula’s DNA matches has responded to me, and wants to join our Vosper group!  Her name is Kay Willis.  I have attached a copy of our cousin chart for Kay’s benefit.

This is what her DNA results look like, compared to Paula (maybe this is her brother’s DNA?):

Kay Willis is descended from Grace W Vosper, the daughter of Rev. Vosper.  This is what her tree looks like now:

We don’t quite know where Rev. Vosper fits into the Vosper family, so I can’t add her to our lineage chart, yet.  Kay’s records indicate that Grace Vosper was born in Australia, and she has this very enticing article showing the 1910 marriage of Winnie Vosper to Vernon Willis, published in the Wellington News in NEW ZEALAND (I actually drove through Johnsonville while on vacation in New Zealand many years ago):

[OK, this ended up being research notes about Rev. John Vosper, and I’m thinking aloud, just follow if you’re interested.  KAY, you WILL be interested!]

I was able to find this about a Rev. JOHN Vosper, formerly of Australia:
“The Rev. John Vosper, formerly of Australia, became Vicar of the Porirua District in 1901. In 1902' Khandallah was constructed a sub-district of the parochial district. In 1905, C.J. Mutter from England was instituted as .lay-evangelist' and in that year, Khandallah was constituted a separate parochial district. Another daughter church was standing on its own. The Rev. E.W.J. McConnell was the first Vicar of Khandallah.

He was apparently Vicar of the Johnsonville Anglican Church from 1901-1909.  See https://johnsonvilleanglicans.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/landmark-of-faith-johnsonville-anglican-church.pdf for more details.

I also found this reference in http://sstephens.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/ADAMSTOWN-ST-STEPHENS-HISTORY.pdf  about Rev. John Vosper in Merewether, Australia:

and
This indicates he arrived in Australia in 1882, I think.

He went to Adamstown, which is not too far away:

This indicates he went to Mt. Morgan, which is 1247 km away.   There is an Anglican church there:
St Mary's Anglican Church
Gordon Street
Mt Morgan, QLD 4714
Australia
Phone: 07 49381512

OH!  Check this out!  A letter from John Vosper published in the newspaper in 1889:  http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/3491302

I am hoping that some of our Vosper cousins in Australia may be familiar with REV. JOHN VOSPER and be able to tell us where he fits in with our family.

I also found this (http://www.aucklandmuseum.com/war-memorial/online-cenotaph/record/C63232 ) about Edwin John Levelis Vosper, his son.  Must be the brother of Grace.

Rev. John Vosper was also the father of Wilfred Borlase Vosper as can be seen here:  http://www.aucklandmuseum.com/war-memorial/online-cenotaph/record/C57627     I wonder if Borlase was his wife’s maiden name?

He (Wilfred) apparently married Flora Gair:

Following Wilfred took me to this family tree on Ancestry:  http://person.ancestry.com/tree/76004860/person/120004380597/facts      MORE VOSPER COUSINS!

Hmmm!   He died on the south island of New Zealand on Christmas Eve.

Check it out, there is a VOSPER Street in Motueka!

Oh my!  This could be an interesting source!

So now we have an authoritative source that he was born in England.

Another Ancestry tree with many sources:  http://person.ancestry.com/tree/17791520/person/19909947774/facts     DOES NOT LIST GRACE, though.  This may be a close cousin to you, Kay.

Hmmmm, maybe he didn’t have much family in Australia, so our cousins there won’t be much help.  Let me try looking for a record for him in Cornwall.  Wish I had a birth date!  The tree above says about 1865.  That tree says his wife’s name was Elizabeth.

From Online Parish Records for Cornwall, 3 possible choices baptized between 1860 and 1870:

I checked marriages there, to see if he might have married before going to Australia, but this is the only record I found:
It may be more likely that he married in Australia or New Zealand.
The earliest child we have with him is Grace in 1886.

I did find this emigration record, though the dates don’t really work:  http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/more-info/?t=emigration&id=81895

There is this one, which is more in the timeline, but wrong destination.  Maybe he went to Canada first?

OK, Kay, that should keep you busy for a little while!

Cousin Teri
